RFID-Based Mobile Payment via PayPal

Mobile payment has gained much attention in electronic business world lately due to the convenience it provides to customers. However, most of available mobile payment methods are rather proprietary, i.e. they can only be used from specific mobile operators with which users have registered for payment services.  Moreover, consumers often think of mobile payment as an unsecured payment channel, especially when there are some possibilities that a mobile phone can be lost or stolen.

This project applied RFID technology for the development of mobile payment. We use PayPal as an intermediate broker to handle the payment connection between consumers and vendors. The payment is charged via PayPal accounts so it can be done regardless of which mobile phone operator that a customer uses. That is, any consumers and vendors who have PayPal accounts can pay via mobile. We also developed a Point-of-Sale (POS) that can communicate with and charge via mobile phone automatically. A secured authentication protocol was also supported in order to authorize a payment transaction remotely via RFID of a mobile phone.
