Wireless Network Management System via OpenNMS

ABSTRACT :

Mahidol University’s wireless network keeps growing to cover areas of every faculty and campus of the university, and the amount of wireless traffic has been rapidly increased. This project aims to design and implement a wireless network management system that supports a variety of devices from different vendors. The system extends the capability of OpenNMS, an open-source network management system, to cover wireless networks and has four components: wireless clients, access points as an intermediary for connecting clients to the network, the Radius server for authenticating and keeping track of wireless usage, and the OpenNMS server for managing the network via SNMP protocol to collect wireless traffic from every access point.
This project has two experiments: monitoring the overall bandwidth usage with varying number of clients, and monitoring the effect of probing data sent with various interval of collecting time through the system. The system can notify and warn the administrator when there is an unusual event or change or outage happened, but cannot modify the configuration of any devices. Thus, we plan to include configuration, fault, and security management in our future work.
