Abstract

Online printing services in the computer laboratories of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been plagued with problems since the establishment of the laboratory.  Problems such as printer error, electrical error, cancellation of print jobs while printing, loss of print jobs, print jobs stealing, paper jamming, quota calculation error, and process showing can cause delay and frustration to many people.

To solve this issue, we propose the “Online Printing System” aiming at developing a new printing service management based on Linux platform to replace the current Print Server system of Microsoft Windows Server which offers limited and erroneous printing service.  Users must authenticate themselves to use the system to prevent abusive printing or document stealing.  Our Online Printing System is compatible with a wide variety of platforms acts as a Print Server which manages user information through OpenLDAP and manages print jobs and print queues through CUPS.  Our Online Printing System provides security of printed work as users must confirm printing jobs again with personal username and password at the server screen before the jobs are printed out. This process will help a system administrator to manage the system efficiently, reduce damage from the error system and create a better printing environment.
