ABSTRACT

Nowadays, software has become an important asset within an organization. Therefore, software asset management has become a necessary business practice. The goals of software asset management are to reduce unnecessary software costs and control business and legal risks related to the ownership and use of software. This research project aims to apply information and communication technology to support software asset management within an organization. The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), one of the newest faculties of Mahidol University, is the project case study.
In this research project, the Software Asset Management System is designed and developed as a Web application. The system facilitates ICT staff in the processes of managing and optimizing the purchase, deployment, maintenance, utilization, and disposal of software within the ICT Faculty. The system consists of five main modules which are: 1) Software inventory module that allows ICT staff to manage software profile information, purchasing information, and license agreements, 2) Software request module that allows ICT staff and students to request new software, 3) Software utilization module that keeps logs of software downloads and utilization, 4) File maintenance module that provides functions for system administration to maintain data, such as software categories, license types, operating systems (OS) and company profiles, in the system database, and 5) Report generation module that provides functions for ICT staff to produce several useful reports such as listing of software by company, top downloaded software, and software utilization reports.
