Abstract

CCTV has been used to record a streaming video in a specific area and it is widely used for many purposes such as security and surveillance. However, the video size is usually very large, and we do not have enough storage to keep all of recorded videos. It also becomes difficult to search for a specific scene, whereas we would rather derive useful information from recorded videos.

This project is to make a snapshot of the recorded video to reduce storage space, to provide a good interface for fast and easy searching, and to analyze and retrieve useful information from the recorded video. This project can detect and count people shown up on the video using the technique of video processing. The system also has a database to keep the derived information so that the user can easily find the information they want without taking too much time to watch all videos.

This project is implemented using the video recorded from a CCTV camera, and the software used to analyze is the OpenCV library and MySQL database. From our preliminary experiments, we found the problems of obtaining high accuracy from the recorded videos of low quality, the limitations of OpenCV functions, and limitations of camera used.
