Abstract

Recently, the number of stroke patients is increasing rapidly. In Thailand the number of stroke patients is around 150,000 in each year. Most of them may have difficulty with daily living activities such as walking and eating. Therefore, the rehabilitation is necessary to help recovery stroke patient’s mental and physical deficits. The recovery process may take weeks, months, or years to understand the level of deficits that patients encounter and regain function which many patients are bored, stressful and lack of motivation to perform exercise and relearning functional tasks. Moreover, the doctors cannot monitor the progress of patient’s recovery. As a result of starting the co-project with Department of Biomedical Engineering, we develop a physical therapy system which is the animation games controlled by Electromyogram (EMG) triggered device that transmits the muscle signal by muscle contraction in order to control the animation game for rehabilitation that offers potential for motivating patients to perform specific therapy tasks that inspired patients to do exercise and enjoy the application. Furthermore, a doctor can monitor the progress of patient exercise‘s result which recorded in the database. In additional, the doctor can give feedback to patients via web-based application. Also this system can be affordable and used within clinic and home. We implement this system by using HF RFID reader for login, after that patients can play animation game that developed by Adobe Flash. While patients use EMG triggered device to send signal via RS232 port for game controlling, signal is calculated and stored in the MySQL database. Doctors can see their patient recovery’s results on a graph generated from MySQL query which displayed on our web-based application.
