ABSTRACT
This research project proposes an Electronic Medical Record System using Multimedia. The objective of the project is to efficiently and effectively design and implement electronic medical records (EMR) containing multimedia information. The project applies information technology techniques in medical record services since the techniques help keep the data of various forms, reduce the storage cost used in recording the same information on the traditional paper and still give fast data access. Moreover, electronic medical records kept are accurate and complete; thus, resulting in effective diagnosis and better treatment. The system consists of 4 main processes: patient registration, patient finding, diagnosis and therapy. During the registration process, the general information of patients is recorded. A patient’s symptom and physical examination data such as coughing manner, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse, and body temperature is noted during the patient finding process. Furthermore, during the diagnosis, doctors can ask to view a patient’s treatment history from the system. The diagnostic process uses two standard international codes to identify the disease that a patient contacts. The two codes are ICD10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision) and ICD9CM (International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification). Finally, the therapeutic process of medical treatment interprets laboratory results and helps doctors plan for effective treatment. This research project has developed the Electronic Medical Record System using Multimedia prototype using Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6.0 SP5 as the development tool. The system works under Microsoft Windows 2000. The system has been tested and simulated with a number of patients and some sampled real data of various data formats. We generated two different scenarios for testing the system. In each scenario, selected information is recorded as well as retrieved to cover all related processes of the system. We have found that our prototype operates efficiently and effectively. However, there is plenty of room for this prototype to be improved so that it will become a full-fledged system.
