ABSTRACT
One of the principles in educational process mentioned in the new act of national education, put into effect in 1999, is that there must be a predefined educational standard and quality assurance at all levels and types of education. Thus, it is one of the main tasks of all schools to follow such educational processes. However, quality assurance for education is a very complex task that is not easy to fulfil without the help of tools or machines like computers and software to perform such tasks. The problem we face now is the lack of a good system and a software package to perform educational quality assurance and related tasks. This research proposed a computerized self assessment model, called “A SELF ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THAILAND” (SASS) to solve the problems in the quality assurance process. The SASS model is intended to be used in elementary education. A set of predefined criteria for a quality assurance system of an elementary school is used for checking against the actual procedures in each school. The schools can set their goals for self-development based on their resources to meet the needs of the local community. The SASS provides facilities to proceed with quality assurance for the standard of students, procedures and other components. It can process the quality standard in all aspects of students themselves, administration processes and supporting facilities and also in all standard items down to all key performance indicators (KPI) at item and index levels. It can find the weak points and also strong points of the school reporting to the administrators. This information can be used for planning and developing the school to reach the standard quality. A prototype of SASS was developed, implemented and tested using client/server architecture which can be run on Local Area Network(LAN). The experimental results showed that SASS can perform satisfactorily all of the user requirement functions necessary for the educational quality assurance process. The user friendly interfaces make it convenient for use in actual situations. However, some user interface modifications are needed for inputting large amounts of data into the system. This research showed the design of SASS in detail as well as its implementation model. The experimental results in actual applications were presented. Its performance was discussed and further development was also suggested.
