ABSTRACT
In the use of a natural language to interface with a database human language is used instead of a computer language to communicate with a computer database. This is an easy and convenient method for non-technical people to access a database without having to know database query language. However, it is rather difficult for a computer to understand human natural languages. A number of models have been proposed to solve such a problem, but the applications are still very limited. Also for Thai language interface with databases, the same problem occurs. Furthermore, most developed models turn out to be ad hoc applications that can be applied to a specific database. This thesis proposed a model for database access using Thai natural language called “Thai Language Access to Database” to solve the problem of database dependency by extending its capability in obtaining database information from a data dictionary. This system works independently of any database application, though applications still must use the same platform. This prototype was further enhanced by extending its capability in translation of Thai query sentences into a standard database query language. Commands related to database query not addition, deletion and modification were the main concern. Thai query sentences were analyzed morphologically and syntactically using the lexicon which was designed for this database access model. The system operates by finding keywords from a query sentence using the longest matching algorithm. It then analyzes the relationship between these keywords with a top-down parser using context-free grammar and then translates a Thai query sentence into a standard database language. The experimental results of this prototype “Thai Language Access to Database” show that it can be successfully used across different database systems on the same platform.
