ABSTRACT
The CORBA-based system with weighted round robin load balancing technique was developed to manage the load balancing of proxy servers and to enhance the capability of servers in the Internet system. Java ORB and Java 2 technologies were integrated and applied to the new developed system. This system was tested at the Mahidol University Computer Center (MUCC) and the results were recorded periodically. The experimental results demonstrated that the CORBA-based system, with weighted round robin load balancing technique, worked well and achieved the same level of efficiency as that obtained from using share loading hardware. Load factor values obtained from the developed system were 21.04%, compared to 21.9% obtained from the old system. Therefore, the developed system can replace the share loading hardware, which has a very high cost per working unit and is very complicated to assemble into a system. The developed system can automatically adjust the configuration of proxy servers without any interruption to the overall system work process. In addition, the efficiency of using the Internet system is also increased because proxy server errors, where the proxy servers do not respond and result in server malfunction, are reduced. Nevertheless, this technique still has some limitations. The implementation using the weighted round robin technique is rather complicated, and the efficiency of the implemented system will be decreased if the size of the system is huge. The value of weight also needs to be adjusted according to the “true” capacity of each proxy server. Further studies, therefore, would improve fault tolerance that can increase the efficiency of CORBA, and suggest alternative ways of calculating more realistic load factor values.
