ABSTRACT
Workflow is an interesting research topic to many scholars and there has been a continuous research about this matter. This is because the knowledge can help create a more effective management system or method of organization management. Take an example from the system of enterprise resource planning. Nowadays it is very important include workflow management. However, enterprise resource planning applications are still very low because the use of enterprise resource planning systems is limited to big business organizations. Other studies that exist at the present mostly offer methods of directing work by relying on activities (activity driven workflow). In actual situations, work process is more likely to be driven from received documents than from activities. This process is in conflict with the direction of activity driven workflow. This thesis presents a language that is more suitable to the real work process. This language, called Document Oriented Workflow Definition Language, is based on an extensible markup language and it describes workflow that is planned by relying on received documents (document driven workflow). Moreover, it also presents an explanation of workflow with pictures that conforms to the invented language. This thesis simulates a work pattern that uses an invented language that is able to follow all work plans. The thesis also makes the work patterns flow in the same way as a real work process and, when compared with workflow patterns currently in use, it can support 14 out of all 21 commonly used workflow patterns.
