ABSTRACT
ISATAP (Intra-Site Automatic Tunnel Addressing Protocol) is an address assignment and host-to-host, host-to-router, router-to-host automatic tunneling mechanism that can be used for communication between IPv6 and IPv4 nodes on an IPv4 intranet. It is suitable for early deployment without spending high cost and replacing all routers that support IPv6. It can be used to observe user demand in an organization to decide where and when it is appropriate to deploy the IPv6 infrastructure. The research was divided into two parts: ISATAP router’s performance evaluation and the ISATAP Monitoring System. In PART I, the study deployed an IPv6 testbed using ISATAP router implementations on Windows 2003, FreeBSD 5.3 with KAME IPv6 protocol stack and RedHat 9.0 with USAGI IPv6 protocol stack. The study measured the performance and compared it by using the Iperf tool. For TCP performance, the experimental results found that ISATAP router implementation on RedHat 9.0 seems to have better performance than Windows 2003 and FreeBSD 5.3, respectively. For UDP performance, the experimental results illustrated that ISATAP router implementation on RedHat 9.0 yielded UDP throughput better than Windows 2003 and FreeBSD 5.3, respectively, the same as TCP throughput. However, for UDP packet loss measurement, the ISATAP router implementation on Windows 2003 gained the best performance among three implementations, because the router started losing packets when the number of packets per second was obviously higher than those of RedHat 9.0 and FreeBSD 5.3. In PART II, the study developed a new ISATAP traffic monitoring tool to monitor, categorize, and summarize the traffic that passes through the ISATAP router. Monitoring results are likely to reveal the real user demands and to help in planning the IPv6 network deployment in the future.
