ABSTRACT
In this research project, we have developed Web Accessibility Transformation Tools (WATT). The goal of this is to implement a Wizard-based evaluation and Transformation tool for helping Web authors to evaluate and semi-automate the construction of accessible web pages based on Web Content Accessibility Guideline 1.0 (WCAG 1.0). We focus on Web accessibility for Blind users who require a type of assistive technology called screen readers that help translate texts displayed on the Web into synthesized speech. We have applied the principle of restructuring Web layouts to ease the problems and obstacles for blind screen readers in dealing with complex tables in a Web page in the following two steps. The first step is the Analysis of the Structure of Web pages in order to restructure web layouts. WATT first analyzes the structure of a Web page by utilizing two techniques of Heuristic and Priority Rules that aim to separate visually fragmented sections of a Web page which consist of the header, navigation menu bar, main content and footer visual section. The second step, HTML-tag Elements Evaluation/Repairing attempts to evaluate and repair a restructured HTML web page in order to identify barriers to accessibility for people with disabilities. System test, the functional and usability tests were used to evaluate the WATT. The evaluation results show that the WATT system performed well in both tests.
