ABSTRACT

Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a multi-hop ad-hoc wireless network where every node can move freely in the topology. MANET has many problems regarding address auto-configuration, security, and complexity. The area of address auto-configuration is a topic of concern and every node gets a unique IP address to continue and correct the connection. Address configuration in MANET can be performed by either manual or auto-configuration. Manual configuration guarantees unique addresses but takes a long time for a large network. Auto-configuration, on the other hand, requires a delay in detecting a duplicate address which is proportional to the number of nodes in the MANET. The study is interested in reducing response time when there is a new request for an IP address, to make sure that every node has a unique IP address when merging and partitioning a target scenario. The study presents a new IP address auto-configuration solution for MANET. The solution is fast and guarantees uniqueness by letting nodes in a MANET distribute address pools for new nodes that enter a MANET, and takes into consideration the partitioning and merging issues and abrupt departure of nodes from the topology. The study describes the design structure of the proposed protocol for supporting both IPv4 and IPv6. The study shows and compares performance of the solution with other related work on the OLSR test bed and also discusses concerns about security vulnerabilities of this proposed protocol.
