ABSTRACT

This dissertation presents Multi Join Order Algorithms (MJOA) for optimizing value-baesd join queries consisting of five join order algorithms: Exhaustive Search with join graph Update (ESU), Exhaustive Search with join graph Update 2 (ESU2), Hybrid Join Order Algorithm (HJOS), Hybrid Join Order Algorithm 2 (HJOA2), and Exhaustive Greedy (EG) Algorithm. The MJOS join order algorithm selection process starts the Greedy Operator Ordering (GOO) Algorithm first. The result of this algorithm, join query cost, is used to estimate the join query costs of the other algorithms. Next, the algorithm that provides the estimated minimum join query cost is selected. Finally, the sub-optimal join order solution pruning process is executed to eliminate the join order routes of the sub-optimal join order solutions generated by each algorithm.

The table relationship of the TPC-H database benchmark is used to simulate join graphs in order to test the MJOA. The experimental results reveal that the MJOA generates the minimum join query costs in most cases. As a result, MJOA is the efficient and effective value-based join query optimization algorithm.
