While substantial progress has been made in increasing access to clean drinking water and sanitation, billions of people\u2014mostly in rural areas\u2014still lack these basic services. Worldwide,\u00a0one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water<\/a>,\u00a0two out of five people do not have a basic hand-washing facility<\/a>\u00a0with soap and water, and more than\u00a0673 million people still practice open defecation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the critical importance of sanitation, hygiene and adequate access to clean water for preventing and containing diseases.\u00a0Hand hygiene saves lives<\/a>.\u00a0According to the World Health Organization,\u00a0handwashing is one of the most effective actions you can take<\/a>\u00a0to reduce the spread of pathogens and prevent infections, including the COVID-19 virus.\u00a0Yet\u00a0billions of people still lack safe water sanitation, and funding is inadequate.<\/span><\/p>
