COVID-19 has\u00a0disrupted billions of lives<\/a>\u00a0and endangered the global economy. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects a\u00a0global recession<\/a>\u00a0as bad as or worse than in 2009. As job losses escalate, the International Labor Organization estimates that\u00a0nearly half of the global workforce is at risk<\/a>\u00a0of losing their livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>

Even before the outbreak of COVID-19<\/a>, one in five countries \u2013 home to billions of people living in poverty \u2013 were likely to see per capita incomes stagnate or decline in 2020. Now, the\u00a0economic and financial shocks<\/a> associated with COVID-19\u2014such as disruptions to industrial production, falling commodity prices, financial market volatility, and rising insecurity\u2014are derailing the already tepid economic growth and compounding heightened risks from other factors.<\/span><\/p>
