Forecasting Thai Stock Prices through DAViS: Contributing to Financial Technology in Thailand

Investing in stocks sounds attractive especially when facing soaring inflation. However, beginner investors might find it difficult to handle the high-risk investments. So, Associate Professor Dr. Suppawong Tuarob from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, Mahidol University and his team developed a system called “DAViS” to forecast Thai stock prices. It was derived from Thai contextual data through research, and it is entitled “DAViS: A unified solution for data collection, analyzation, and visualization in real-time stock market prediction.”

The forecasting system, DAViS, was invented because of Associate Professor Dr. Suppawong’s interest in stock investment as a starting point. According to his observations, Thai stocks are different from international stocks especially in the U.S. stock market as American investors are not as sensitive as Thais. As a result, Thai stock prices vary depending on the circumstances: political protests, national policies, business closures, etc.

The integration of massive data from various sources including social media like Twitter, Pantip, and stock market news and reports caused an obstacle concerning limited data processing assistance in the Thai language. In spite of that, it finally succeeded. The system applies automatic processing by looking for patterns to imitate the way that humans learn (Machine Learning) to report the historical stock prices that will lead to tomorrow’s stock price predictions.

“It would facilitate investors’ decisions as to whether buy the stock or not as the data were analyzed from diverse local sources comprised of news articles published in the media, Pantip posts, updates on Twitter, and aspects of other investors.”

Although the research was publicized solely in an academic formatted article, Associate Professor Dr. Suppawong believes it could be more accessible to the general public if transformed into applications on websites and smartphones. Still, it requires more support for development. Its interdisciplinary approach to artificial intelligence and finance would contribute to financial technology in Thailand.

The research article, “DAViS: A unified solution for data collection, analyzation, and visualization in real-time stock market prediction” (2021) by ICT Mahidol’s instructors and alumni including Associate Professor Dr. Suppawong Tuarob, Dr. Thanapon Noraset, Dr. Tipajin Thaipisutikul, Mr. Poom Wettayakorn, Mr. Ponpat Phetchai, Mr. Siripong Traivijitkhun and Dr. Sunghoon Lim from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea, was published in the journal indexed by Scopus and SCImago Journal Rank, Quartile 1 of Finance, “Journal of Financial Innovation.”
